Diaspora's eye
Statement of Selection
Over the past five or six years, whenever I visited the homes of my book-loving friends, Kim Thúy's ru was always there on the shelf. It was the kind of book that caught the eye, a book you couldn't help but read, and one that compelled you to tell others about it once you finished. When I heard it had been adapted into a film, I knew I had to see it. The film proved to be just as intense and moving as I had hoped, and I am deeply grateful for this precious opportunity to experience it with you and share our thoughts.
The film follows a family who, after the Vietnam War, arrived in Quebec, Canada as boat people to begin a new life, all seen through the eyes of a teenage girl named An Tịnh. We, who have never endured such things, may never fully grasp a heart that constantly retreats into traumatic memories even amidst a warm welcome. Yet, I believe there is profound meaning in receiving even the fleeting moments that grace the screen. This is also a film about what a person becomes after staring long and hard at the fragments of a painful story and eventually absorbing them into their soul. I am looking forward to the screening this May. I truly hope many of you will be there to join us. (CHUNG Serang)
