“Space and Diaspora” remains a future that has yet to arrive-a realm of science fiction and imagination. However, lunar and Martian exploration, along with plans for base construction, are already underway at the national level. In the private sector, figures like Elon Musk are planning not just exploration, but actual migration to the Moon and Mars. While space is not yet a subject of diaspora, it is highly likely to become a significant element when discussing the diaspora of the future.
In this lecture, we will first examine the concept of space diaspora through the lens of Sci-Fi and imagination. Then, we will look into the manned exploration missions and Mars migration programs currently being designed and planned. We will envision the identities and lifestyles of the “Lunar humans” and “Martian humans” who will emerge following this extraterrestrial diaspora. Finally, we will explore the potential conflicts and cooperation that may arise between “Earth humans” and these new lunar and martian humans. (RHEE Myung-hyun)
